Best known for his 'Tulip series' and 'Womb Chair' amongst many more popular designs, Eero Saarinen grew up with two incredibly creative parents, his father a respected architect and his mother a sculptor, weaver and photographer. Learning early on that every object should be designed in its next largest context, Saarinen kept this ideal for life and built a reputation as an architect and designer whose furniture designs won a countless number of awards and are still loved by people all over the world today.
He became well known for being able to range his style to meet the needs and match the context of the projects he was working on. His first real critical acknowledgement was when he designed a chair with Charles Eames for a competition in 1940 entitled the 'Organic Design in Home Furnishings.' This chair, 'The Tulip Chair' received first prize and has gone on to receive world recognition today, still featuring in many people’s homes, workplaces and even the TV show Star Trek!
“““Always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context – a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan.” Eero Saarinen
